| The Food and Drug Administration’s decision to require mandatory labeling of trans fatty acids on the Nutrition Facts panel prompted much discussion within the food industry about possible alternatives to partially-hydrogenated vegetable oil. Soybean growers are responding to the food industry’s need for healthier oils by funding research to develop and commercialize soybean varieties with enhanced oil characteristics with the ultimate goal of reducing or eliminating the need for hydrogenation. Currently, the soybean industry is working together to commercialize low-linolenic and mid-oleic soy oil to meet the end-user needs. The United Soybean Board has been a leader in forming the QUALISOY™ Board, a partnership of leading food industry, academia and government representatives, to help unify industry efforts and encourage industry-wide collaboration to reach these goals. Specifically, QUALISOY is a collaborative effort among the soybean industry to develop healthier soybeans and soy oil, reduce environmental impacts of livestock production through improved soybean meal, and improve global competitiveness of the U.S. soybean industry. Representatives from USB, the Institute of Shortening and Edible Oils, USDA ARS, Monsanto, Cargill, ADM and Pioneer are all active partners in this initiative. This forum will bring together edible oils experts and food industry representatives to discuss the emerging technologies currently available and those in the research pipeline. The forum will include presentations by respected oils experts who will discuss alternatives to hydrogenation, including interesterification, blending, and trait innovations through biotechnology. Additionally, representatives from the QUALISOY Board will share information about recent QUALISOY efforts, currently available technologies that fall under the QUALISOY umbrella, and give a preview of the future of edible oils. Future varieties of soybeans are being developed to address health and functionality needs of the marketplace, including the need for trans fat free oil. This session will help attendees identify the solutions right for them. | |||
