Edward P. Richard, Jr., Sugarcane Research Unit, USDA-ARS-Southern Regional Research Center, 5883 USDA Rd., Houma, LA 70360, 985-872-5042, msa.ars.usda.gov/la/srrc The mission of the Sugarcane Research Unit (SRU) is to conduct research that will lead to increased sugarcane production efficiency. The mission is approached by developing improved cultivars for the production of sugar and other value-added products through conventional and molecular breeding and selection techniques that emphasize the incorporation of desirable genes from exotic germplasm and the development of molecular markers to detect general, physiological, and pest resistance traits early in the selection process. Utilizing an interdisciplinary research approach, the Unit develops integrated and environmentally friendly management strategies that insure optimum yields at reduced costs, hasten maturation, and combat a constantly evolving pest complex that includes diseases, insects, and weed.
