Coenzyme Q10 (known also as Ubiquinone Q10), has reached a leading position in the nutraceutical and functional food industry during the last decade. Emerging research suggests that consumption of 50 to 100 mg per day of Coenzyme Q10 may have various health benefits such as potent antioxidative effects and improvement of the cardiovascular function and immune system. Moreover, reduction in CoQ10 blood levels (170 nM/mM) by 25 to 75% was proven to induce clinical syndromes. The use of Coenzyme Q10 is limited to capsules and opaque beverages due to the fact that Coenzyme Q10 is insoluble in water. Its solubility in vegetable oils is in the range of 100 to 200 ppm. Recently, we have succeeded in formulating an oil-based concentrate that is easily diluted in aqueous systems to form nano-sized self-assembled structured liquids (NSSL). Commercially available CoQ10 is solubilized in this clear concentrate. The main characteristics of the concentrate are: (1) active load of 8% CoQ10; (2) suitable for soft-gel filling and beverage applications; (3) 100% clear; (4) no separation; (5) dilutable at any ratio in beverage systems; and (6) stable in wide pH/ temperature range. Preclinical human study confirmed significantly improved bioavailability and efficacy. The CoQ10 and vitamin E levels in blood were increased by 40 and 10%, respectively, compared to commercial powder preparations.
