M. F. NELSON, Scientific and Regulatory Affairs, Grocery Manufacturers of America, Inc., 2401 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W., 2nd Fl., Washington, DC 20037 The food and beverage industry is in the business of satisfying consumer needs. As concern about obesity has increased, so has interest in specific diets, in particular low-carbohydrate plans. While the food industry can develop products to meet the requirements of these low-carbohydrate plans, the U.S. labeling regulations do not allow saying anything about these products, that is, currently there are no formal rules for making a carbohydrate claim. The GMA proposal for a range of carbohydrate claims will be presented, as well as an update on the status of these requests with the FDA.
