To accomplish this mission CSREES provides: 1). Leadership to identify, develop, and manage programs to support university- and other institutional-based research, education and extension activities, and 2). Fair, effective, and efficient administration of federal assistance implementing research, education, and extension awards and agreements. Priority areas are developed in consultation with a broad array of stakeholder groups, panelists, multistate research groups and advisory boards. CSREES supports programs through three funding mechanisms: Competitive grants, formula funds, and legislatively-directed projects. Principal programs of competitive funding in food science area are: a. Improving Food Quality and Value, and Food Safety which are under the umbrella of the National Research Initiative (NRI), b. Improving Food Quality and Value in NRI-Integrated program, c. National Integrated Food Safety Initiative (NIFSI) which is authorized in the Integrated Competitive Grants Program, d. Small Business Innovation Research, and e. Higher education programs. Integrated programs require that at least two of the three critical functions of Land Grant Universities (Research, Education, and Extension) be integrated in a project such that the success of one function is dependent on the other(s). Other programs which have food science components in NRI include: Bioactive Food Components for Optimal Health, Human Nutrition and Obesity, Epidemiological Approaches to Food Safety, Functional Genomics of Agriculturally Important Organisms, and Nanoscale Science and Engineering for Agriculture and Food Systems. In addition to standard grants NRI supports new investigator awards, postdoctoral fellowships, and strengthening awards, while NRI-Integrated and NIFSI provide bridge grants for those institutions that have been less successful at obtaining Federal research funding. Recent trends in CSREES competitive funding in food science, and related areas, efforts on collaboration with the federal agencies, and statistics on awards will be discussed.
