Successful Grantsmanship: Prerequisite for Success in the Academy

D. B. LUND, North Central Regional Association of Agricultural Experiment Station Directors, Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison, 212-D Agriculture Hall, 1450 Linden Dr., Madison, WI 53706-1562

To be successful and have a prosperous career in the academy requires that one be successful in obtaining grants to support the chosen activities. This applies whether one's appointment is research, teaching and/or extension/public service. Furthermore, today's institutions of higher education are requiring that at least some portion of grants that support a program be obtained from competitive pools. This presentation will develop the rationale behind this push, reviewing the components that go into indirect costs and the need in our institutions of higher education to recover them. There are also several strategies that institutions have developed to assist faculty and staff to develop successful proposals and these will be reviewed.
