L. KEENER, International Product Safety Consultants, 4021 W. Bertona Street, Seattle, WA 98199-1934 For world governments, a safe and abundant food supply is fundamental. World leaders understand the role of a safe food supply in advancing and promoting the general prosperity of their nations. Regulators and legislators draft, pass, and promulgate food safety laws and directives, most often with a view to protecting and preserving the public health. Regulations built upon the scaffolding of food safety have frequently been an impediment to the advances offered by science and technology. Moreover, food safety concerns are frequently cited as underpinning the justification for erecting trade barriers or other measures that have the impact of curtailing free trade, without a clear benefit to protecting public health. Food additives (direct and indirect) and processing aids are routinely flagged as food safety issues of concern. The global approaches used by regulators for controlling what is added to the food supply are greatly disparate. This presentation will compare and contrast both current and emerging trends in the area of food additives regulations.
