A. MIXEN, Low Carbohydrate Report, NPD Foodworld, NPD Group, Inc., 9399 W. Higgins Rd., Ste. 300, Rosemont, IL 60018 The NPD Group has been continuously tracking American's eating behavior and dieting habits for over 20 years, providing unique insight into the many factors affecting carbohydrate consumption. While low carb diets have received much attention in recent years, NPD is able to not only assess their impact on the American diet, but also to give a longer-term perspective on broad behavioral shifts impacting carb-based products as well. The following topics will be addressed: - Where is the low carb movement in terms of its ‘life cycle'? How have awareness, trial, and current participation levels for Atkins, South Beach, and other low carb diets changed over time? - What impact does low carb dieting have on actual consumption behavior … what foods and beverages are most likely to be cut from (or added to) the diet of a person who's watching their carbs? - What shifts have taken place in consumers' attitudes toward carbs? … sugar? … calories? - To what extent are ‘ex'-low carb dieters still watching their carbs … do they return to their previous eating habits, or carry some of the carb ‘avoidance' behavior with them? - What are the top sources of carbs in the typical American diet? How has this changed over time? - To what extent are consumers choosing whole grains? What percent are trying to get more fiber in their diet? - What insight can be gained from examining consumer attitudes and behaviors surrounding the low fat craze of the early 1990's … does this parallel what occurred with the low carb phenomenon? - Dieting aside, what are some of the long-term broader behavioral shifts that have impacted consumption of select carbs?
