S. P. ANDERSEN, Smart Packaging Business, International Paper Co., 6285 Tri-Ridge Blvd., Loveland, OH 45140 and A. Clark, Smart Packaging, International Paper, Memphis, TN 38197. As a 5 y. supplier of RFID based supply chain solutions and services, International Paper Smart Packaging is positioned to leverage key solutions and experience to aid in the successful implementation of RFID technology. Current Retailer and Governmental RFID/EPC product tag mandates have accelerated the adoption and implementation rate of RFID technology. The technology is touted to increase supply chain visibility; therefore, improving product security, trace ability, and efficiency of the global supply chain. As initial RFID retail implementations are deemed successful, it is projected that additional retail and government agency mandates will follow and effectively drive full proliferation of RFID tagged products. Assuming positive results are obtained, it is very possible all consumer product companies will be affected in some capacity from supplying RFID enabled products to full enterprise RFID implementations. Although the EPCglobal Organization is resolving several obstacles relative to adoption, namely, standardizing: frequencies, protocols, and intellectual property positions, additional implementation hurdles remain. Additional considerations relative to: RFID read ability due to product content, RFID serialization software integration, product tagging processes, business value, process change management, to name a few, remain as significant issues and may jeopardize the success of the implementation. International Paper Smart Packaging has defined effective processes and methodologies to guide customers through the compliance decision process and achieve cost effective compliance solutions. Key deliverables addressed through this process include: statistical analysis of RFID reads on specific products or family of products, optimum RFID tagging strategy considering tag cost and tag placement, cost/benefit analysis for several product tagging options, providing short term mandate compliance recommendations, and the development of long term EPC / legacy integration strategies. Through this session, International Paper will present compliance solution processes, considerations, and share recent “lessons learned” from the field.
