Since the initial discovery of the interactions of grapefruit with drugs, and the resulting media coverage, many patients have been very concerned regarding their consumption of grapefruit products. However, it is only a very small group of drugs that interact with grapefruit juice, and most of the time therapeutic alternatives are readily available. In this presentation, recent advances in the area of grapefruit-drug interactions will be presented in detail. The significance and meaning of the presented study outcomes will be discussed in relation to possible recommendations for consumers and physicians. An overview of interactions between drugs and other foods such as meats, milk, coffee, and fruit juices will be given. The underlying mechanisms of interaction in absorption, metabolism, and excretion will be described for specific examples. Possible future directives for research will be addressed in context with the goals of minimizing the risk of potential severe interactions and promoting scientifically well supported conclusions for scientists, health care professionals, and consumers.
