M. A. MOORMAN, W.K. Kellogg Institute, Kellogg Co., 2 Hamblin Ave. E., Battle Creek, MI 49017 The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act requires food ingredient legends to declare the presence of food allergens using common terms that consumers can understand. This will enable consumers to identify the presence of food allergens in foods, as avoidance is the only effective practice for food allergen-sensitive individuals. Food industry compliance to this act has presented challenges, as the presence of allergenic protein in certain ingredients is not well characterized. As written, this bill may cause food manufacturers to declare the presence of food allergens that do not present risk to the food allergen-sensitive community. Further research is needed to better understand the presence and significance of proteins in certain food ingredients.
