M. K. WAGNER, E. & J. Gallo Winery, 600 Yosemite Blvd., Modesto, CA 95353 Product development is under pressure to create innovative new products at a time when there are great pressures to reduce development costs, labor, and other problem-solving tools. R&D groups are in a constant mode of development and improvement over last year's or last quarter's success. Scientists and technologists often feel that they are the individuals within the organization who feel the results of the speed and cost business game. But what is the view from senior management? Balancing the pressures of the business requirements with the people needs of fast pace, expectations of senior management, and high-level individual performance requires striving to manage expectations of stakeholders and stockholders. Dr. Wagner will provide a perspective from a senior research manager about what it is like to have responsibility for programs, people, productivity, and profits. She will share her approaches to management and will provide an understanding of approaches that allow for excellent business success while finding ways to keep staff motivated. Through examples that are both thoughtful and entertaining, we will have the opportunity to also understand what "faster," "better," and "cheaper" will look like in the years ahead.
