Five years later: Looking at how the university prepares someone for fast product development

C. A. MCCALL, Product Research, Frito-Lay Inc., 7701 Legacy Dr., Plano, TX 75266

You have dedicated much of your life to prepare for this moment: decades of education, good grades, years of focused research, publications, work, and leadership experiences. You have done all you were “supposed” to do and have landed a job in the Food Industry. When you get there, are you truly prepared for what lies ahead? Have you had the proper coaching, guidance, and experiences to allow you to seamlessly move into the role of product developer? Are you practiced in many of the skills you will need to succeed? Do you have a good sense of what will happen and what you will need to do? The answer to many of these questions is “Yes” – you will rely on your scientific foundation and the principles you learned in school, every day. However, there are vast differences between industry and academic timelines, priorities and missions. Understanding these differences and mastering these newly needed skills quickly is critical to success. The goal of this presentation is to provide insights on the gap between what you think you know and what you need to know. Dr. McCall will attempt to debunk misperceptions that may exist, and will share personal experiences with this challenging, yet exciting, transitional period. In this talk, she will present thoughts, stories, and advice collected by interviewing a group of her peers—those who have completed an advanced degree in Food Science and have been working in industry for 3 to 5 years.
