R. C. BROWN, Frito-Lay, Inc., 5909 Porto Fino, Plano, TX 75093 Decreasing trans fatty acids in the diet was a major recommendation coming out of the 2005 Dietary Guidelines. Frito-Lay has already made significant changes to its products and packaging to help consumers make educated snack choices. In early 2003, Frito-Lay began eliminating trans fats from three of its best selling corn snacks by converting to corn oil, and began changing packaging to include a trans fat content line, and thus Frito-Lay's most popular products are already on store shelves with this nutrition label change. In addition to removing trans fats from core brands, Frito-Lay has continued to introduce improved nutritional options in snacks. Issues of how to balance cost, technological challenges, and consumer preferences while implementing dietary guidance will be discussed.
