MCMURRY, Office of Public Health and Science, U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 1101 Wootton Parkway, Suite LL100, Rockville, MD 20852 The U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services and of Agriculture are collaborating in support of the 2005 Dietary Guidelines on the development of health messages and communication materials targeted to the public and to government agencies and other organizations, health policy professionals, health communicators, nutrition educators, the media, and others. Research on communication methods and practices related to subject matter pertinent to the dietary guidelines---nutrition, physical activity, energy balance, and food safety---will be described. Topics highlighted in the research efforts include audience segmentation, trends, messages, content, communication vehicles or channels, education programs, and interactive tools, among others.
