2005 Dietary Guidelines for calcium, vitamin D, potassium, and sodium

C. M. WEAVER, Dept. of Foods & Nutrition, Purdue Univ., 1264 Stone Hall, West Lafayette, IN 47907-1264

The 2005 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee approached achieving nutrient adequacy by proposing food patterns that attempted to meet the recommended nutrient intakes as established by the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) process. Nutrients that were identified as having a high prevalence of inadequacy in the U.S. population included calcium and potassium for both adults and children. Vitamin D was not evaluated for prevalence of inadequacy. Adequate Intakes as currently established by the DRI process were difficult to achieve in the proposed food patterns for adults for vitamin D as well as for potassium. The Committee recommended three servings of low fat dairy products daily or their equivalent to help meet nutrient adequacy for calcium, potassium, magnesium, and vitamin D as well as for decreasing risk of chronic disease. The Committee recommended reducing sodium intake to less than the Upper Level of 2,300 mg per day, noting that many persons may benefit by further reduction.
