P. ROYALL, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 1101 Wootton Parkway, Suite LL100, Rockville, MD 20852

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans provides science-based advice to promote health and to reduce risk for major chronic diseases through diet and physical activity. By law (Public Law 101-445, Section 301), the Secretaries of the Departments of Agriculture and of Health and Human Services issue a report every five years that contains nutritional and dietary information and guidelines for the general public. The Dietary Guidelines form the basis of Federal food, nutrition education, and information programs, and by law are to be used as the foundation for all Federal food, nutrition, and health programs and policies. The charge to the expert 2005 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee will be explained and the process used by the two departments to finalize the 2005 Dietary Guidelines will be described.
