L. MAJNO, Instron Corp., 100 Royall St., Canton, MA 02021 The In-Spec 2200 handheld tester is a lightweight precision instrument that provides a new level of portability for characterizing the physical properties of food and packaging. Weighing under 3 kg (7 lb.), the battery-powered In-Spec 2200 can be used virtually anywhere while providing the accuracy and functionality normally associated with larger, more expensive systems. The In-Spec 2200 allows testing to move beyond the laboratory to the location where it is needed - on the production floor, in a kitchen, on store shelves, outside in a field or up a tree. Tests are performed with a single pull of the trigger – very convenient in onsite environments. Results are displayed immediately on the built-in Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), eliminating the need to wait for lab data. The full color Sony® PDA provides control over testing conditions, supporting standard curves for overlay and comparison as well as custom displays for specific applications. Results can be uploaded to a master database with the push of a button. Test grips and fixtures are available to handle the full spectrum of food testing requirements including puncture, peel, tension, compression and bend testing. The unit can measure loads from a few grams to 500 N (110 lb.), at speeds from zero to 750 mm/minute. This performance range makes the In-Spec 2200 suitable for any food-related application, from evaluating the freshness of marshmallows to the strength of heavy-duty packaging. The built-in actuator eliminates the variability associated with force gauges, while the precision drive system ensures that test conditions are applied consistently and repeatably. With its handheld portability, the In-Spec 2200 is a natural fit wherever it is more appropriate to bring the test to the food product rather than bring the product to the lab. The result: streamlined processes, greater QC/QA productivity and faster availability of results.
