Health information for better nutrition: Positive food industry communications with consumers

R. S. APPLEBAUM and R. Earl. Scientific & Regulatory Affairs, National Food Processors Association, 1350 I St. N.W., Ste. 300, Washington, DC 20005

The food industry’s primary role is to provide safe, wholesome, and nutritious foods to its consumers and customers alike. In an era where attention to diet and health is at an all-time high, the food industry must deliver to consumers a wide variety of foods designed to meet their dietary needs for a healthful lifestyle, as well as their specific, individual demands for products that taste good; are safe, nutritious, and convenient; and provide value. Moreover, the food industry works to be part of the solution to helping consumers understand concepts concerning “how to eat” which is a foundation to achieving healthful diets and lifestyles. This presentation will address the food industry’s role in supporting and promoting information and educational activities focused on diet and health, as well as our efforts focused on advancing science-based dietary guidance, food labeling, and nutrition recommendations to help consumers attain healthy weight and healthful lifestyles.
