D. A. MCCARRON and K. A. McCarron. Academic Network, 1221 S.W. Yamhill St., Ste. 303, Portland, OR 97205 This presentation will discuss the findings from the national, cross-sector initiative Shaping America’s Youth. Implemented in November 2003, the first phase of this initiative sought to survey at least 1000 organizations throughout the US with programs or initiatives targeting the national health crisis of inactivity and overweight in children and adolescents. Extending across government, business, health, and education sectors, the survey was designed to identify the disparate programs and efforts presently in place to address the sedentary lifestyles and increasing weight of our nation’s children. Availability of this information in a single registry will enable interested parties throughout the country to focus funding, research, and interventions where they are most needed, most promising, and ultimately most effective. Developed with the input of the Initiative’s advisory group, comprising experts in the fields of children’s health, education, policy, nutrition, and exercise, organization-specific surveys were distributed online to all programs working in these areas that had registered on the Shaping America’s Youth web site. A summary of the collected data and the registry will be available on the Internet for public access. This presentation will provide specific data analyses from the survey, and will highlight those aspects of our nation’s efforts that appear to be supported by strong evidence-based outcome measures as well as those that may require more coordinated national effort. Shaping America’s Youth is jointly sponsored by Nike, McNeil Pharmaceuticals, and Campbell Soup Company, with the involvement of the US Surgeon General’s Office, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and American Diabetes Association, the American Obesity Association, and Kaiser Permanente, and is directed by Academic Network LLC.
