National Nanotechnology Initiative: R&D components relating to advancing food science and technology

E. C. TEAGUE, National Nanotechnology Coordination Office, National Nanotechnology Initiative, 4201 Wilson Blvd., Ste. 505, Arlington, VA 22230

Nanotechnology research and development is a top priority of the current Administration. Scientific and technological breakthroughs in the ability to measure, manipulate and understand matter on the atomic and molecular scale are enabling the development of novel structures, systems, and devices. The National Nanotechnology Initiative is a coordinated multi-agency federal research program that supports not only fundamental and applied research but also development of necessary tools and infrastructure, education and workforce development, and the study of societal issues. Realizing the full potential of the discoveries being made in this field requires multidisciplinary efforts among researchers, as well as truly interdisciplinary work by those who can bridge the “languages” and cultures of biology, physics, chemistry and engineering. Food science and technology is one of the fields that touches upon all of these disciplines and in which nanotechnology can play an important role. The talk will focus on R&D components of the Initiative that relate to advancing food science and technology through applications of nanotechnology and efforts being made to coordinate this R&D among federal agencies.
