Issues surrounding various national and international certification systems

S. K. WELSCH, OneCert, 2811 Tennyson St., Lincoln, NE 68516

There are a myriad of organic standards that can vary both within and between countries. In addition to differences in standards, countries differ on the required documentation that must accompany imported organic products. Understanding the requirements are critical to assuring success in marketing, both domestic and export.

The US National Organic Program (NOP) created a uniform standard for organic products sold in the US, but there is no uniform standard for organic products in international trade. Products certified under the NOP are not automatically accepted as organic in other parts of the world. Likewise, products that will be labeled as organic in the US must be certified to US standards—certification to international standards is not enough.

The three largest markets for organic products are in the United States, European Union, and Japan. The speaker will review the major certification requirements, highlighting differences and critical issues between the three.
