Monday AMHOT TOPICS: The brave new world of nutragenomics: A roadmap to the future | ||
| Humanity is on the brink of a revolution. The human genome has been sequenced, rapidly evolving gene chip technology will soon allow large groups of individuals to be screened for susceptibility or resistance to disease, and the private sector (including pharmaceutical companies) is gearing up to survive in what promises to be an intensely competitive new environment. How will the food industry fare in this Brave New World? Will companies exploit the burgeoning field of nutragenomics to develop a new generation of functional foods tailored to meet the needs of individuals with specific genetic traits? Will genetic screening allow individualized dietary recommendations that can be accommodated by the food industry? Will companies form new partnerships with the technology and/or pharmaceutical industries in order to stay relevant? Or will the food industry cede this opportunity to others? This Hot Topic session will open with a basic primer on how gene chips and other new technologies work and what they can do. The potential business opportunities and obstacles created by the field of nutragenomics will then be discussed followed by a review of the social/ethical issues involved. The session will conclude with a discussion of what your company needs to do today to address the exciting new era of nutragenomics. | ||
