The Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) Macronutrient Report was released in September 2002 by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and updates the 1989 Recommended Dietary Allowances. This extensive report provides the most recent scientific consensus allowing wider ranges of recommended intakes of dietary macronutrients including fats, protein and carbohydrates. Specifically, the Report addresses: fats, fatty acids including new recommendations for trans fatty acids and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, protein, carbohydrates including dietary fiber, sugars and added sugars and energy. The DRI Report will have significant impact on nutrition and health related policy, regulations, labeling and food formulation in the US and Canada. This Forum will address the following questions: · What are the specific recommendations in the Macronutrient Report and how are they different from existing macronutrient intake recommendations? · How will this report influence the government policy, nutrition programs and regulations concerning food products? · How will this report impact the food industry? · What is the role of industry in helping consumers meet recommendations of this Report?
