Nutraceutical potential of Mexican oregano (Lippia graveolens Kunth)

Natural sources of plant antioxidants have been extensively studied. Natural antioxidants are carotenoids, phenolic compounds, chlorophylls, etc. Oregano is a spice rich in phenolic compounds with antioxidants properties; however the information existing about Mexican oregano is poor. To evaluate the antioxidant and antimutagenic activity of essential oil of Mexican oregano (Lippia graveolens Kunth) obtained from two dry methods. The antioxidant potential was evaluated using beta-carotene-linoleate and 1, 1-dhiphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) in vitro model system. To examine the effect of essential oil components against 1-nitropirene (1-NP) mutagenicity, the microsuspension assay with tester strains TA100 and TA98, was used Essential oil of Mexican oregano obtained from leaves dry in dark conditions showed best antioxidant activity and inhibited DPPH higher than Trolox and BHT (commercial antioxidants used as control). The results suggested that essential oil of Mexican oregano is a good alternative as natural antioxidant for the food biotechnology and cosmetic development. Lippia graveolens Kunth is a Mexican herbs used as spices, however is interesting to know it nutraceutical potential
