Functional food ingredients |
P. M. GAYNOR, Center for Food Safety & Applied Nutrition, U.S. Food & Drug Administration, Office of Food Additive Safety, 5100 Paint Branch Pkwy., HFS-255, College Park, MD 20740-3835 The Food and Drug Administration’s regulatory authority is based on the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, as amended (U. S. Code, Title 21). FDA regulates certain products in interstate commerce, including foods, drugs, cosmetics, biologicals, and medical devices. Products such as foods and drugs are distinguished by their intended use. The safety standard (i.e., reasonable certainty of no harm) is the same for all food ingredients, regardless of whether the intended use of the ingredient is subject to premarket approval as a food additive or is not subject to premarket approval because it is generally recognized as safe. Case studies of functional food ingredients will be presented to provide a regulatory perspective.
