Video tour of the Texas A&M University E-beam Food Research Facility |
S. D. PILLAI, Poultry Science Dept., Texas A&M Univ., 418 Kleberg Ctr., 2472 TAMU, College Station, TX 77843-2472 The Texas A&M University Electron Beam Food Research Facility is located on the Research Park on the Texas A&M University campus in College Station, Texas. It is a 16,000 sq. foot dual modality facility in that both E-beam and X-ray irradiation capabilities are available. There are 2 vertically mounted 10 MeV, 18 Kilowatt Electron Beam Linear Accelerators and a single horizontally mounted 5 MeV, 15 Kilowatt X-Ray Linear Accelerator. This video tour is designed to specifically address practical questions that individuals from the food industry and academic researchers have in terms of E-beam/X-ray irradiation. This video presentation will provide the audience an overview of the steps that are involved in dose-mapping, how food products are received at the facility, how a specific irradiation dose is delivered, and how the irradiation dose is measured. The occupational safety attributes of the facility will be highlighted. The presentation will also provide specific information regarding QA/QC in E-beam irradiation that food safety individuals in industry and academic researchers need to be aware of.
