Current development of Asian functional food and natural health products in Canada

Functional food has been an important trend for food industry worldwide. In recent years, functional foods and natural health food products have gained popularity in Canada. Although Asian style functional food products developed have domestic consumers, a large quantity has been export to Asian markets especially in China, Taiwan, and southeastern Asian countries. Varieties of those products using traditional Chinese ingredients are sold in domestic natural food stores as well as by mail order services. This presentation will focus on current development technology used on health food product, Canadian laws and regulation on health food products, market distribution channels, Canadian consumer altitude on Asian functional food products, export schemes, challenges and opportunities for the future direction on development of Asian functional food and beverages in Canada.
