An organic success case study: Horizon Organic Foods

K. SHEA, Horizon Organic Dairy, 6711 Horizon Ln., Longmont, CO 80503

Horizon Organic was founded by two veterans of the natural products' industry in 1991 in Boulder, CO as an organic dairy products business with a single product line--organic yogurt. It is now a diversified business that includes a full line of organic dairy, organic eggs and organic juices that are all produced without the use of antibiotics, hormones, and potentially harmful synthetic pesticides. The company's sales are in excess of $150 million; it is publicly traded and is carried in over 15,000 supermarkets and natural foods stores nationwide. The company's milk accounts for nearly 70% of the organic milk sold in the US. It is the leading organic brand in the US.

The history of the company and the development of the Horizon brand will be presented. In addition, Horizon Organic has made a committment to organic agriculture with its Horizon Organic Agriculture Project, which supports a number of efforts to support organic agriculture and convert more land to organic.
