Transformations: Corporate university -> knowledge management -> what's next?

P. PERKINS, Research Development & Innovation, Bush Brothers & Co., 1016 E. Weisgarber Rd., Knoxville, TN 37909

This presentation will discuss the changes taking place in the world of Corporate Universities and how those changes impact business success. As a back-drop to this topic, specific examples in the field of Knowledge Management will be reviewed and thoughts on where this might lead will be offered. Some of the benefits promised by consultants to the early adopters of Knowledge Management have proven to be highly beneficial, but many organizations are still struggling to see the return on the investment. Reflection upon the “winners” and “losers” will allow us to consider what may come next in the evolution of this discipline. Everyone recognizes the phenomenal growth in our technological capabilities over the past 30 years, but the real value to the organization comes from how these capabilities are leveraged by the people in their organizations. The successful migration of data management to information management and, more recently, into knowledge management is an illustration of the importance of the people component of the people/process/technology model. Developing this model further, idea management and even innovation management will be proffered as future focal points for Corporate Universities.
