Separation of phytochemicals: Case studies |
P. ELANKOVAN, Bioprocess Engineering Div., MBI International, 3900 Collins Rd., Lansing, MI 48910 Phytoceuticals or herbal extracts derived from plant materials are in crude form, powder or extracts. Some of the technical barriers that exist for the production of these phytoceuticals are properties such as bitter flavor, unpleasant taste, color and insolubility, as well as settling down properties. It is necessary to develop separation and purification processes for concentrating active components while minimizing unwanted or toxic components from plant materials and other sources. This presentation will be focused on traditional separation and purification processes to concentrate bioactive components from plant materials with case studies.
