| Interest and activity are increasing in export and well as import of an expanding scope of food products containing a wide variety of dietary ingredients. Food products including fortified conventional foods, foods for special dietary uses, physical performance enhancing foods, and dietary supplements may include not only the well-recognized nutrients, but also newer nutrients, phytonutrients, certain botanicals, and other dietary ingredients. The European Commission, several Codex Alimentarius committees, and some countries are exploring new and often radically changed regulatory approaches. The Transatlantic Business Dialogue is supporting regulatory requirements that are harmonized on a scientific basis. The fresh regulatory approaches being considered may provide opportunities for new types of trade, but also could erect unanticipated barriers to trade. The best approach to establishing safety is a major controversy and the object of intense regulatory development activity by the EC and Codex. Involvement in the institutional processes for development of new regulations provides opportunity to impact them and to gain familiarity with the requirements adopted. The panelists in this forum will discuss the issues from the perspective of their involvements in the processes. The institutional processes, legal requirements, scientific issues, and trade impacts will be presented. This, in turn, will provide guidance for manufacturers’ research and development activities to better meet the evolving regulatory requirements and access new market opportunities. | ||
