Session 31: Room 265

Monday AM

HOT TOPIC: What happened to the "R" in R&D... is it alive and well and if so, where is it living?

We find ourselves living in an age where R&D budgets are under the financial microscope, timelines for improving goods and services are shrinking from years to months, and firms are redefining the metrics of R&D success and competitive advantage. Competitive advantage can be achieved in ways that range from rich consumer insights and speed to market to marketing muscle and technical expertise. However many companies find them selves having to scrutinize where they allocate budget dollars, many times at the expense of consumer understanding and technical prowess. This session has been designed to explore many issues around this subject - How to justify the “R” in “R&D” as it relates to marketplace success? Who is doing the research if consumer products companies can not? What does the R&D landscape look like? And where innovative technologies will come from for our industry over the next 10 years?
