Session 1: Room 265

Sunday AM

HOT TOPIC: Bioterrorism: Is the food industry at risk?

Acts of bioterrorism remain a real threat to producers, processors, distributors, retailers, consumers and researchers in today's international food industry. Bioterrorist acts may be politically motivated, a result of labor unrest, or extortion. How significant is the risk to you and your organization? How can you protect yourself against bioterrorist acts? What should you so if you are a victim? This session will address these issues and provide you with the answers you need. It will include scenario-based presentations addressing topics such as contamination and threatened contamination of foods, business disruption, and creation of fear in the food-consuming public. Threat analysis and avenue of attacks that have been, or may be employed by a bioterrorist will be discussed. Additionally, feasible defenses that have individuals or organizations may employ and where to find help governmental or other entities to develop a plan of analysis, defense and reaction to a bioterrorist threat will be discussed. The objectives of this session are to address “real world” situations. Attendees will develop an awareness of their organization’s vulnerability to bioterrorism and a foundation to combat the threat. The format will include short presentations by invited experts in a number of the aspects of bioterrorism; presentation of relevant case studies using comparative scenarios or actual incidents; development of a checklist; and a panel question and answer session.
