The effective use of the outside laboratory as a business partner |
R. M. LAPIN, Silliker Laboratories of Illinois, 1304 Halstead St., Chicago Hts., IL 60411 Large companies typically have the people and data to manage the quality of their products and services. The small- to mid-sized organization often lacks these resources, but still has the same need to control quality. The outside lab can augment the quality systems of the small company. The outside lab provides many benefits. These include: (1) a wide variety of tests and knowledge of these tests; (2) 7-days-a-week operation; (3) a separate facility performing pathogen testing, which avoids the potential of in-plant cross-contamination; (4) extensive knowledge of regulations; and, (5) consulting capabilities to help resolve plant problems. To be successful, the relationship between the lab and the client company is conducted in a win-win environment and based upon mutual trust, respect, and benefit. Three actions help to establish the relationship. First, establish clear requirements. What tests should be run? What frequency? What are the alternatives? Is there a less expensive, quicker method available? The more the lab knows about the client’s business needs, the more help can be provided. Does the client use a “hold and release program?” If so, what time are results needed and what time must the samples arrive in the lab to assure adequate test time. Secondly, does the lab have adequate quality systems? The lab is visited to assess quality systems. Is the space and lighting adequate? Are the training files complete for each technician? What are the error rates, number of customer complaints, and the results of the last proficiency tests? Any ISO Guide 25 accredited lab will have this information. Lastly, arrange routine meetings quarterly or semi-annually. Review trends in your results and involve the lab in problem investigation. The outside lab can become a business partner for the small- to mid-sized company, but it takes the manufacturer as customer to initiate the relationship.
